If there is one thing that I’ve learned in my copywriting career, it is that creativity is a muscle, not a specific skill set, and an adept copywriter can flex their creativity to seamlessly meet the needs of a brand, client, or project.
I have had the pleasure of writing about the everyday brands of American flash-sale retailer Zulily, the luxury brands of the iconic London department store Harrods and everything in between. Then, in search of a new challenge outside of the world of fashion and e-commerce, I became the sole creative writer for the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).
No matter my prior experience with the subject matter, I have found a way to create engaging experiences for audiences with a wide variety of interests and backgrounds.

In the past 75 years, AILA has seen tremendous change both within our membership and in the field of immigration law itself; our diverse community growing from just 20 New York attorneys in 1946 to over 16,000 members around the world today. Much has changed over the years, but what has always remained constant is our members’ unyielding dedication to making a difference in the lives of countless individuals and to improving the practice of immigration law.
AILA’s 75th anniversary provides the opportunity to celebrate our community and our shared history.
I invite you all to explore our timeline of AILA milestones, read the reflections of past AILA presidents, to share your own AILA memories, and to learn about other ways to join in the celebration.
Keep an eye out for events in the coming months celebrating the trials and triumphs that we have faced over the last 75 years, and for updates about the much-anticipated AILA Annual Conference in June 2022. I had the pleasure of overseeing Liz during a portion of her time at zulily, a break-neck-speed, high-volume e-commerce company. When Liz initially joined our team as a coordinator, she was eager to excel and took the nebulous aspects of the role on with vigor. That energy carried through and she quickly became the backbone of the team, providing solutions and ideas to process improvement at every turn. As fate would have it, Liz also happened to be one of the most naturally gifted writers I’ve ever met. She expressed interest in moving her career in the copywriting direction and despite a lack of formal training, sought out every opportunity to hone in on her craft and refine her writing style. When the time came to grow the team, it was a no-brainer, Liz was the obvious choice.
As a copywriter, Liz was an absolute bar-raiser. She continuously pushed herself for better results and consistently sought out feedback to improve. This sense of cultural dialogue and exchange is not literal, but instead can be admired in the details of the clothes, including the choice of fabrics, mood and proportions. Discovering his true calling for fashion design while earning a degree in Architectural Studies greatly informs his approach to design, as he thinks of the body as a landscape upon which garments are built – bringing even more meaning to the brand’s philosophy: clothes are to be lived in. Presented in a sophisticated yet subdued colour palette, this all culminates in London-based Qasimi’s unique and fresh perspective with worldwide appeal.
GRLFRND
GRLFRND, Revolve’s debut denim label, combines vintage inspirations, modern tailoring and a major dose of attitude to create its highly covetable jeans. Since their unveiling at the brand’s members-only store in West Hollywood, the LA-made designs have been spotted on fashion’s most prominent influencers and tastemakers. The designs look and feel like heirloom denim with their premium constructions and authentic washes, but flatter the female form like never before. Punctuation Guide
Working with others from varied professional backgrounds and experience levels, it became clear that it would be helpful to have a resource that not only explains the ways in which punctuation should effectively be employed, but one that also used examples specific to our work.Dangling Modifiers
Dangling modifiers are a grammatical pitfall that can have both novice and experienced writers scratching their heads at the best of times and confusing their readers at the worst. After needing to train each of the junior copywriters I mentored about this very subject, I decided it would be beneficial to have a resource that senior copywriters and juniors alike could turn to to explain, learn and grow as writers. I also led an accompanying workshop for all 20 juniors.Problematic Narratives
As the voice of a brand, copywriters have dual core responsibilities: firstly, to represent brands in a positive, authentic light and secondly, to ensure all readers enjoy their experience interacting with your platform and message. As individuals, however, it can be a challenge to see past your own perspective and experiences and identify potential missteps that may present themselves in addressing a diverse audience. It was of the utmost importance to me that my fellow writers have the resources and platform to show a commitment to avoiding problematic words and narratives.Role Training Documents
Though I’ve not been able to include them here due to company privacy concerns, I created training documents for each role that I held at Zulily (five in total). These documents detailed the responsibilities of the role, glossaries of need-to-know terms, how the work is done using the various internal systems and a breakdown of what an average day looked like in that position. The goal of these docs was to ensure that everyone who held the role would have everything that they would need to be successful right from the start and that less knowledge would be lost at what is a high-turnover company.
